VALUES, ATTITUDES, AND OPINIONS

Ø Communication effectiveness is influenced by values, attitudes and opinions of the communicators.

 u Values

Ø Values are the motive behind purposeful action. They are the ends to which we act and come in many forms. Cultural values are values accepted by religions or societies and reflect what is important in each context.

 u Examples of values

Ø Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They (should) determine your priorities, and, deep down, they're probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to.

 u Attitudes

Ø In psychology, an attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors toward a particular object, person, thing, or event. Attitudes are often the result of experience or upbringing, and they can have a powerful influence over behavior. While attitudes are enduring, they can also change.

Ø Affective component: this involves a person's feelings / emotions about the attitude object. For example: “I am scared of spiders”. Behavioral (or conative) component: the way the attitude we have influences on how we act or behave. For example: “I will avoid spiders and scream if I see one”.

Ø Confidence, Optimism, Sincerity, and Reliability are traits that represent positive attitude.

Ø Hatred, Pessimism, Resentment, and Doubt are traits that represent negative attitude.

Ø Indifference and Detachment are traits that represent neutral attitude.
