Data Compression

Data compression is the process of,

modifying, encoding, or converting the structure of the bit of data in such a way that it consumes less space on the disk.

‘File Compression’ or ‘Data Compression is done by the following software,

WinZip

WinRAR

7-Zip

Universal Extractor

Types of Data Compression:

Data compression have many types, we will discuss just two of them

Lossless Data Compression.

Lossy Data Compression.

Lossless Data Compression:

Lossless compression is a method of data compression,

The size of the file is reduced without sacrificing image quality.

No data is lost when this method is used.

Data is preserved and is in a reversible process.

The technique will decompress the data and restore it exactly to its original state.

Lossy Data Compression:

Lossy data compression is a method of data compression,

It is used for digital multimedia, such as audio, video, images, and streaming data.

Lossy works by eliminating unnecessary or additional information contained in most multimedia files. For example, a JPEG image can be reduced by up to 80 percent of its original size without affecting image quality.

This can be achieved by decreasing the number of pixels, brightness, and color density. background audio sounds are removed in MP3 and MPEG without creating much difference.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Data Compression:

Data takes less space.

The time needed to transmit the data and the total network bandwidth is reduced.

Compressing data can save storage capacity.

Speed up file transfer.

Decrease costs for storage hardware and network bandwidth.

Disadvantage:

When you compress your data using the lossy compression method, it will eliminate some of your data on restoring the compressed data.
