PROBLEMS OR BARRIERS IN COMMUNICATION

 

·        Every person’s mind is a unique filter

Ø  Different dispositions

Ø  Different societies

Ø  Different families

Ø  Different languages

Ø  Different religions etc.

 

·        Three main problems

Ø  Conventions of meaning

Ø  Perceptions of reality

Ø  Values, attitudes and opinions

 

·        Conventions of meaning

Ø  Semantic triangle

Ø  Every reality has a symbol which is known through common experience

Ø  Reality is actually the existence of referent

Ø  The person is real and his name is the symbols

Ø  World is full of symbols and reality

Ø  Your common experience increases your knowledge of symbol ad reality

 

 

 

·        Semantics

Ø  The study of words and their meanings is called semantics

Ø  House, home

Ø  Empty and vacant

Ø  Continuous and continual

 

 

·        Denotations and Connotations

Ø  The dictionary meaning of a word is called denotation while the meaning of a word through common experience is called connotations

Ø  Burn

Ø  Denotative meaning of burn is to put on fire while connotative meaning is to photocopy

 

·        Euphemism

Ø  Replacing a harsh word with a soft word is called euphemism

Ø  Death with no more

Ø  Failed with not succeeded

Ø  Hate with not liked

 

·        Abbreviations and acronyms

Ø  The initials of a word are called abbreviation

Ø  Pm, NY, ace, omg, uob

Ø  When these initials make another word that is called an acronym

Ø  Buitems, laser, wapda, lifo, fifo, gat, numl

 

 

·        Criticism: Irony and satire

Ø  When the speaker just means the opposite of what he says

Ø  Satire is harsh criticism…. sometimes a wrong school of thought in the perception of reality

Ø  To take out the positive and negative points both

Ø  Constructive and destructive criticism

 

·        Idioms, difficult vocabulary, expression

Ø  Simple the language which is understandable to the receiver

Ø  One word has much meaning and the sender and receiver take different meaning so the problem occurs.

 

·        Problem occurs…….

Ø  Sender and receiver give a different meaning to the same words

Ø  Our different background and interests and experiences contribute a lot

Ø  Sender’s the intended meaning is very important in getting the desired result.
